Kobran formgavs av Ralph Lysell (1907-1987) och Gösta Thames (1916-2006). Thames var bosatt i Mjölby från 1980-talet till sin död. På Mjölby bibliotek finns också en kobratelefon utställd i deras lokalhistoriska utställning under temat "Kommunikationer i Mjölby". Designarbetet med Ericofonen hade redan börjat 1940–1941 med formgivaren Ralph Lysells förslag till en så kallad enstyckstelefon, där apparatdelen och luren var i ett enda stycke. Han hade anställts av Ericsson sommaren 1939 och placerats i en grupp med flera industridesigners.
