A connection to *Stobi is indicated by ‘Stobaeus’, while the name John suggests a Christian background, although he incorporates no explicitly Christian references. His name is supplied to us by The Greek Anthology is a collection of over 6,000 short Greek poems. They cover a great variety of subjects in various styles, and were composed by some 300 poets over more than a millenium of Greek culture.

The work was originally divided into two volumes containing two books each. The two volumes became separated in the manuscript tradition, and the first volume became known as the Extracts and the second volume became known as the Anthology . This collection of essays represents the most comprehensive study to date on the anthology compiled by Stobaeus (5th c. AD). Stobaeus, Joannes （ Ἰωάννης ὁ Στοβαῖος), derived his surname apparently from being a native of Stobi in Macedonia. Of his personal history we know nothing. Even the age in which he lived cannot be fixed with accuracy. He lived, at all events, later than Hierocles, whom he quotes.

Wachsmuth and Hense's edition attempts, as far as possible, to restore the text of the Anthology as it was written by Stobaeus. Bibliography.
